Hotel check: Leading Family Hotel & Resort Dachstein König

In the Upper Austrian town of Gosau lies the Kinderhotel Dachsteinkönig, which opened in December 2016. Recently I was allowed to spend a few days here with my family. The conclusion: The Dachstein König impressed us with its exclusive furnishings and the extensive family offer.

It was our first stay in a pure family hotel and I think we hit the jackpot right away. The Hotel Dachsteinkönig is located in the Gosautal, a side valley of the upper Traun valley. From here, one has a wonderful view to the surrounding mountains and the Dachstein mountains. In summer the area is a hiker’s paradise, in winter it is only a stone’s throw to the nearest ski lifts. Far away from any hustle and bustle, the family hotel is ideally suited as a base for excursions – for example to the Gosau lakes or the world-famous Hallstättersee. Especially the front Gosausee lake is ideal for families with small children, as the way is easily accessible with prams.

But let’s talk about the Dachstein King himself. The family hotel has all the amenities you could wish for. The 117 family suites and chalets all have their own children’s room and offer plenty of space during your stay. But for me, the absolute highlight took place already before our arrival. I called the hotel in advance to find out what we had to take with us for our baby. The answer: only clothes. Prams – can be borrowed; baby monitors anyway; baby food is available for free at two Hipp-Stations; bottle warmer, kettle, humidifier, steriliator, night light and more – it’s all inclusive.

We were accommodated in a 40m² “Toni” family suite. These offer, in addition to a separate children’s room, an open wardrobe, a large sleeping and living area, a cosy corner and a terrace with a fantastic view of the Dachstein massif. The bed is very comfortable, the bathroom is equipped with two separate washbasins and the WLAN worked perfectly in the whole living area. I also found the silence to be very pleasant, not only at night.

Let us get to the pool area: the 15 centimetres deep baby pool with a water temperature of 36 degrees was optimal for our Zoe. Here she could sit relaxed and splash in the water. The pool for big and small (including water slides) is right next door. From both the indoor and outdoor pool you have a great view of the mountains. Especially at sunset a great experience.

The Dachstein King offers child care from the 7th day of life. In the Baby-Club (0-1 years), in the crawling club (1-2 years), in the Mini-Club (3-5 years), in the Maxi-Club (6-11 years) and in the Teenie-Club (12-16 years) professional child carers take care of the young guests. Especially if the children are already a little “older”, the offer in the 2.000m² indoor play area is fantastic. Here you will find: a gymnasium, indoor go-karts, cinema, bowling alley, table tennis tables as well as a soft play area and many other cool leisure activities. Our little mouse is still too small for that, but she liked the in-house petting zoo with donkeys and goats even more.

From the day of arrival on, you will always be assigned the same seat in the restaurant. Therewith, the annoying search for a free and clean table is omitted. For breakfast, as also for lunch and dinner there is a varied buffet to choose from. Here is the only small point of criticism that I have to mention. Unfortunately, the kitchen cannot quite keep up with the rest of the offer of the house. Please do not misunderstand: The food was good, fresh and varied. But probably my demands were already so high due to the high standard in the hotel that I still see potential in this area.
